That is the ultimate compliment for an easy appetizer! Sausage Squares (or Sausage Rolls/Puffs) are always a huge hit, especially with kids, because they combine flaky pastry with a savory, seasoned filling. They are quick to make, easy to hold, and incredibly satisfying.

Since they are being snatched right off the tray, they must be perfectly seasoned and baked!

Here is the recipe for quick and addictive Sausage and Cheese Squares using puff pastry:

🥓 Quick & Addictive Sausage Squares (Puff Pastry Puffs)

This recipe is simple, savory, and perfect for an appetizer or snack.

🛒 Ingredients

ItemQuantityNotes
Puff Pastry1 sheetStore-bought, thawed but cold.
Cooked Sausage1 lb (450g)Ground breakfast sausage (cooked and drained) or mild Italian sausage.
Cream Cheese4 oz (115g)Softened, full-fat.
Shredded Cheese1/2 cupCheddar or Monterey Jack.
Seasoning1 tspDried Mustard or Garlic Powder (optional).
Egg1 largeWhisked, for egg wash.

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Prepare the Filling (10 minutes)

  1. Cook Sausage: Cook the ground sausage in a skillet until fully browned. Drain off all excess grease thoroughly.
  2. Mix Filling: In a large bowl, combine the drained, still-warm sausage with the softened cream cheese, shredded cheese, and seasoning. Mix well until the cream cheese is fully incorporated and the mixture is uniform. Set aside to cool slightly.

2. Prepare the Pastry (5 minutes)

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Unroll the puff pastry sheet onto a lightly floured surface. Cut the sheet in half to create two rectangles.

3. Assemble and Cut (5 minutes)

  1. Spread: Spread the sausage mixture evenly over one of the puff pastry rectangles.
  2. Top: Place the second puff pastry rectangle directly on top of the filling, pressing the edges down gently to seal.
  3. Cut: Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to cut the large rectangle into 12 to 16 small squares (or triangles).

4. Bake (15 minutes)

  1. Place the squares on the prepared baking sheet.
  2. Brush the tops of the squares with the whisked egg wash for a beautiful golden shine.
  3. Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and fully puffed.

Serve warm with a side of ketchup or mustard for dipping!
