How to make sugar-free candied orange slices so good they disappear in a minute at my house. Easy, delicious, and quick to make

admin, December 14, 2025

That sounds like a fantastic, healthy, and quick treat! Making sugar-free candied orange slices that are truly delicious usually involves using a sugar substitute (like Erythritol or Xylitol) and skipping the traditional long, multi-day candying process in favor of a quicker, concentrated method.

This method results in slices that are soft, slightly chewy, intensely flavored, and very addictive!

Here is a recipe for Quick, Sugar-Free Candied Orange Slices:

🍊 Sugar-Free Candied Orange Slices (Quick Method)

This recipe is quick and uses a gentle simmer to tenderize the peels without hours of boiling.

📋 Ingredients

QuantityIngredientNotes
2-3 largeOrangesNavel or Valencia work well. Organic is best, as you are consuming the peel.
1 cup (240ml)WaterFor the initial simple syrup
1 cup (200g)Granulated SweetenerErythritol, Xylitol, or Monk Fruit blend. Avoid Stevia for this, as it doesn’t provide the bulk.
1/4 cup (60ml)Fresh Orange JuiceAdds extra flavor to the syrup.
1/4 tspSaltOptional, but balances the sweetness beautifully.
Optional CoatingExtra Powdered SweetenerErythritol or Xylitol, powdered in a blender.

🔪 Instructions (Quick Prep & Simmer)

1. Prepare the Orange Slices

  1. Slice: Wash the oranges thoroughly. Slice them into thin rounds, about 3 mm thick.
  2. Blanch (Optional but Recommended for Less Bitterness): Place the slices in a pot, cover with cold water, bring to a boil, and let simmer for 2 minutes. Drain the water. Repeat this step once more if you want the absolute least bitter slices.

2. Create the Sugar-Free Syrup

  1. In a wide, shallow pot or deep skillet, combine the 1 cup of water, the 1 cup of sweetener, the orange juice, and the pinch of salt.
  2. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sweetener is completely dissolved.

3. Simmer and Soften

  1. Carefully place the orange slices into the simmering syrup in a single layer (or two layers maximum).
  2. Reduce the heat to low and let the slices gently simmer for 40–60 minutes. The goal is to let the peel soften and become translucent, absorbing the syrup. The syrup will thicken slightly.
  3. Note: If the liquid reduces too much, add a tablespoon of water.

4. Cool and Dry (The Quick Finish)

  1. Once the peels are tender and translucent, turn off the heat. Let the slices cool completely in the syrup for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Drying: Carefully remove the slices using tongs and place them on a rack set over a baking sheet (to catch the excess syrup).
  3. Let the slices air dry at room temperature for 4–6 hours, or until they are sticky but firm to the touch.

5. Optional: Coating or Dipping

  • Coating: For a non-sticky finish, dust the dried slices lightly with powdered sugar substitute.
  • Dipping (Extra Decadence): Dip one half of the dried slice in melted sugar-free dark chocolate and let it set on parchment paper.

These slices are incredibly satisfying and disappear fast!
